It has been known that kurtosis measurements are dependent on the diffusion time (Δ), due to restricted diffusion, heterogeneity of diffusion compartments or water exchange over different compartments. In this study, we applied oscillating diffusion gradient to investigate the diffusion time effect to DKI measurements in rat brain tissues in vivo. Mean diffusivity and kurtosis were found to increase and decrease respectively with Δ, indicating increased restriction and microstructure heterogeneity. The Δ dependency may provide insights into the complex cellular properties in normal and diseased neural tissues.
