The trend toward higher performance computing means that numerical EM modeling of coil/patient interactions is becoming much more practical and useful, especially for high field. Using realistic body models of the Virtual Family, provided by ITIS Foundation, the magnetic and electric fields induced by a quadrature birdcage head coil were simulated using the commercial FDTD package SEMCAD X throughout the human head at 7T. B1+ fields created by driving the coil in single-channel or quadrature modes were compared to experimental measurements. The close match between these B1+ field distributions provides strong evidence of the accuracy of these simulation tools.
